Chelsea yet again failed to secure a win in a match after taking the lead.
We shared points with Southampton at Stamford Bridge yesterday even after a brilliant start which saw us go two goals ahead in the first 30 mins of the game.
Chelsea started really well. The combination and interplay between Chilwell, Havertz and Timo Werner was just beautiful to watch at the start. They didn’t just play beautiful football but backed it with goals as Werner finally scored in first and second Premier League goals for Chelsea in space of the first 30 mins.
Chilwell and Jorginho played a clever pass for Werner for the first and second goal consecutively but the German also had a lot to do after the pass before he could find the net in both instance.
Chelsea looked like they were going to to run riot on Southampton but kept missing some clear cut chances which should have been executed better.
Pulisic had a chance in the right wing, also Mason Mount in space of few minutes but they failed to capitalize on it to put the game to bed.
At about close to halftime, Chelsea completely turned the game against themselves after Havertz carelessly lost the ball in a sensitive area and Danny Ings capitalized on it to make it 2-1 just before half time.
After the restart, Chelsea were just simply dominated by Southampton. The Saints came with more confidence and applied so much pressure on Chelsea till we broke and carelessly gave out another goal to Southampton to make it 2-2.
Chelsea however replied instantly through a beautiful counter to grab their lead back as Kai Havertz got to the end of Werner’s pass to get a simple finish.
Chelsea even after restoring their lead failed to control the game once again and a late minute setpiece action gave Southampton a way to get their third goal and denying us the three points in a very dissapointing end.
What went wrong?
Time and time again these specific thing happens to us since the start of last season. A little bit of pressure from our opponent and we break.
What went wrong was simply the second half. We failed to control the game and while defensive and keeper errors played part in some of the goals we conceded, we gave Soton too much respect at first in the second half, allowing them so dominate our midfield while our defense was just all over the place.
The absence of Kovacic played a major role in our inability to control the game in the second half.
Jorginho and Kante can control the midfield perfectly well when the opposition are not pressing like what we saw in the first half, but once we are given a bit of pressure they usually pannick and Kovacic is sadly our only midfielder who is confident and suited for that central midfield role in those kind of instances. He has the ability to hold possession under pressure, comit pressurizers and initiate a counter. Kante and Jorginho on the other hand mostly just play the ball sideways to the fullbacks when under pressure and the fullbacks end up shooting the ball to no particular destination at the end.
It is understood that there’s a good reason for Kovacic not being in the squad as his wife just delivered and there was nothing Lampard could do really because there’s no other midfielder available. Lampard had to make Reece James play the midfield at the closing stages of the game to try and get more control but it still wasn’t as effective. Sadly, we needed a Ross Barkley change in that midfield with the absence of Kovacic as at when we were leading 3-2 but oh wait! He was loaned out!
Positives From the match
1. Werners goals: Werner got a first half brace which marked his first and second Premier League goals and was unlucky not to have gotten an hattrick.
The German has been desperately looking for this goal and we hope these will be the first of many to come.
2. Chilwell’s Performance: Gave out some silly and unnecessary fouls but was brilliant elsewhere especially in the first half, he was almost unplayable and you could feel the upgrade from our previous leftbacks.
3. Havertz: For someone who started slowly in the Premier League, Havertz is already looking much like himself. His teamwork, first touch, passes and linkup with the forward when playing that free role has improved immensely and it’s just amazing to watch. His positioning is also heavily underrated also. His performance today surely shows that he his going to be a big player for us in coming games.
4. Better Understand in attack: I could remember our first game of the season game against Brighton, we were almost clueless when attacking but there’s was a lot of improvement from that in these recent games. The players are beginning to understand themselves more both on and off the pitch and it’s showing enormously in their linkup play. With the arrival of fully fit Ziyech and Pulisic, our attack will be almost unstoppable.
