Match Report

We defeated Leeds United 3-1 in front of the fans at Stamford Bridge and immediately climbed to the top of the Premier League Table having played an extra game ahead of Tottenham and Liverpool.

Both team started really good with the first chance of the game coming very early from Chelsea at about the 2nd minute through Ziyech after a delicious pass from Thiago Silva. Ziyech however failed to scored as the Leeds goal Keeper made a beautiful save.

The all attacking and high pressing Leeds were then the first to record a goal, converting Chelsea’s attack in split seconds to theirs and it was Chelsea who were one goal behind after only 4 minutes into the game.

Chelsea however responded positively and got one back to level the score through the in form Olivier Giroud but received a blow shortly after as Ziyech walked out to be replaced by Pulisic in what looked like an hamstring injury.

After the restart, Leeds were less proactive but still dangerous when attacking and Chelsea needed a corner and a Superb header from Zouma to take the lead.

Lampard responded immediately by substituting Havertz for Kovacic to bring more stability to Chelsea’s midfield and also to give assistance to Kante who was working tirelessly throughout.

Chelsea finally sealed all three points after Kovacic initiated a counter attack for Werner and Pulisic to finish.

Players Assessment

Positive Performers

  • Reece James: He continued to show why he is being chosen by Lampard ahead of Azpilicueta. Provide a solid performance offensively and defensively and got an assist to his name.
  • Thiago Silva: Composure couldn’t get any better than what we saw in Thiago Silva and for a high pressing and attacking team like leads, that deserves some accolades.
  • Kurt Zouma: Kurt maybe could have done better for the first goal but other than that he was solid. Came through when we needed it the most with a beautiful lift and header to give us the lead.
  • Kante: This guy isn’t human. There must be some sort of engine running in him. What I saw yesterday is the Kante that won the PFA player of the year in a season where Eden Hazard flourished. He was magnificent defensively and his progressive play to suck out Leeds press and start an attack was just brilliant.
  • Mason Mount: The reason why every manager likes him is not far fetched. He is one of the most hardworking players during games. Tactically yesterday, he was also brilliant with his quick transition with the ball from defense to attack.
  • Giroud: This is the man of form. It feels like any ball he hits will turn into a goal 😅. 6 games in the last 6 Premier League starts. Not bad for a 34 years old.
  • Werner: This guy’s work rate is unbelievable. Runs like a flash but he really needs to starts burying those cheap chances🙄. A brilliant performance overall for the German.

Not so positive performers

  • Kai Havertz: Probably the tempo of the game was too high for his current fitness level but dude really need to step up his agility. This is the Premier League and high temple is a norm here
  • Mendy: Could have done better for the first goal by not committing sooner.
  • Pulisic: Pulisic was incredible by statistics buy team work was lacking. Just like the game he had against Sevilla, the American is now finding it difficult to pass the ball at the right time.

What’s Next for us?

We return to Champions League this midweek to face Krasnodar in what is totally an insignificant contest for us.

How I’m sure Lampard will be looking to test new legs and tactics with the game.
