Thomas Tuchel suprisingly benched Édouard Mendy in Chelsea’s last game against Newcastle early this week.
Chelsea’s almost forgotten goalie Kepa Arrizabalaga started that Premier League game after putting in a fine performance previously in the FA Cup match against Barnsley.
After the back to back appearances from Kepa, which was also his first Premier League start since the 3-3 draw against Southampton last year, people started wondering if Thomas Tuchel now prefers the Spaniard to Mendy.
Tuchel however have cleared the air in his press conference ahead of Southampton’s clash tomorrow and reveals that Édouard is still Chelsea’s number 1 goalkeeper insisting the Senegalese deserves it.
Thomas Tuchel on goalkeeper situation:
I don’t know and nothing has changed, Edou is the number one and deserves to be the number one. You cannot hide your opinion, things have to be clear and you cannot be afraid of it.
Things have not changed, we need three strong goalkeepers and everybody ready. The goals to achieve are high at this club, we need all 22 players to be ready now. If it is for five minutes then be ready for five minutes.
