Match Preview

Chelsea will take on Spanish leaders Atletico Madrid tonight in the Uefa Champions League round of 16 first leg (Away)

The match will be played without fans at a neutral ground in Bucharest Romania (Arena Nationala Stadium) due to Covid-19 restrictions, tho it will be recorded as an away fixture like it was played in Atletico Madrid’s home.

There will be a return leg which will also be played without fans but at Stamford Bridge on the 17th of March.

Squad & Injury Updates

Chelsea will be without Thiago Silva who Tuchel feels haven’t recovered full yet while Atletico Madrid will be without Giminez who suffered an injury in their last match.

Chelsea however have been handed a boost in Christian Pulisic who returned from a minor calf issue and travelled with the squad.

What both coaches said ahead of the match

Thomas Tuchel says his priority is the game he plays, not a particular competition.

Tuchel admits he tried to sign Suarez for PSG in the summer: “There was a possibility that he was about to leave Barcelona and who wouldn’t be interested in signing a top player in world history and in football. We tried out luck but he chose Atletico and proved his quality”

Diego Simeone on the challenge of Chelsea: “They are an important rival with great players. Our chances are 50-50, we don’t need to talk about it but do our job.”

Diego Simeone thinks Chelsea are no weaker without Thiago Silva and adds: “They made the change to Tuchel, a really good team, they improved after the change. Look at the squad, they can face any team in Europe.”
