Match Preview

Chelsea welcome current Spanish leaders Atletico Madrid to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night for the Uefa Champions League round of 16 second leg clash.

Chelsea took an advantage in the first at Atletico Madrid’s “home” (Budapest) last month with a 1-0 win which means the Diego Simeone’s side will have to win if they want to progress ahead of Chelsea.

Injury Updates and Suspensions

Atletico Madrid welcomes Carrasco, Giminez and Trippier from injury after the trio missed out in the first leg.

Chelsea on they other hand will be worried as they will be without Tammy Abraham and Thiago Silva due to injuries while also missing the chance to feature Jorginho and Mason Mount as they’re both suspended for the game.

What’s at Stake?

As I mentioned earlier, Chelsea won the first leg away from 1-0 which means the blues have an away goal which is almost insignificant tho because Atletico Madrid will have to win anyway to have a chance of qualifying.

Any win from Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge means they go through with away goals except a 1-0 win which will take the game to extra time and penalties.

Chelsea however only need a draw to secure a place in the quarter finals.

What both coaches said about opponent’s team

Diego Simeone on Chelsea:

I believe today they don’t have a weakness. The only thing is they don’t know what can happen from a negative point of view. They have not had a negative result yet and that will be a question until it happens.

We are playing against a team who are playing quite well. We have to win.

Tuchel on Atleti:

For me, I expect more or less the same match as in Bucharest. They have Trippier, Gimenez and Carrasco at the back which changes the structure a bit.
