Chelsea will take on newly promoted side West Brom today at Hawthorns stadium.
Chelsea performed superbly in their last match, thrashing Barnsley 6-0 in the EFL Cup while West Brom crashed out in the first round after loosing to Brentford on penalties.
West Brom have been awful since the start of the season having failed to take a single point from both of their first two Premier League games so challenging a big side like Chelsea today will be a really big test on their character.
Chelsea on the other hand suffered a loss also in their last Premier League outing to Champions Liverpool and after their expedition on Barnsley, we are hoping the confidence they were seeking out for has been found.
The likes of Kai Havertz who has been slow and awful in his first two games scored a superb hattrick against Barnsley and will be hoping to continue in such form today.
What to expect
West Brom might be on edge currently after loosing about all the games they have played this season but I personally don’t expect them to be walkovers for Chelsea today.
We are are going to play at their home and honestly they have nothing really to loose because they are clearly the underdogs and as all eyes will be focused on how Chelsea performs.
I think they are going to try to protect the pride in their home and obviously try to send a good message to everyone that they ain’t walkovers by giving a challenging test to Chelsea.
However Chelsea’s victory lie’s in their own hands. We have the resources to overcome any strength or test they try to put out today. We just have to be focused and play a good game, avoid unnecessary errors that will lead to them scoring for free and we will secure all three points.
I guess what to expect is not a free ride like we had against Barnsley in our last match but a bit bumpy one this time. However we should get to the end of the tunnel successfully if we ride well.
injury update / Suspension
Lampard confirmed in his press conference that Ziyech and Pulisic are still ruled out for the game today.
The pair have been unable to play a single game this season due to fitness issues after both recovering from an injury and Lampard has claimed they still aren’t ready this week but hope in one or two weeks time they would be.
Lampard confirmed however that Thiago Silva and Chilwel who had some minutes in the Carabao Cup are fit to start today but he didn’t forgot to point out how important it is to be careful with them especially as we have a pretty much harder game against Tottenham coming up closely on Thuesday.
For suspensions, Christensen would have to wait a while before being eligible to play another Premier League game after picking up a straight Red card against Liverpool in our last Premier League match.
Lampard was also quick to dismiss the fact that new goalkeeper signing Edouard Mendy will be having his debut today. The boss clearly stated the Mendy won’t be featuring today and will be focused in training and fitness for the time being.
- Werner first goal: It is most likely appropriate that Werner scores his for Chelsea Premier League goal today. The German has been brilliant in terms of all round play but has failed to find the back of the net. Many will be expecting him to finally get into the scoresheet today and failure to do that will certainly raise some kind of troll from rival fans and concern from Chelsea fans.
- Havertz & Werner link up: Havertz finally got to play his favourite No 10 position against Barnsley and he linked up superbly with striker Tammy Abraham. Now, everyone is anxious to see how he links up with Werner whilst playing from the same position.
- Kepa or Caballero: Lampard decided to use Caballero against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup and the Argentine’s performance was incredible through out the game. He made 9 saves in total and kept a cleansheet. This is something which is proven to be very difficult for Kepa. Tho Lampard insisted that using Caballero instead of Kepa for that game was just a mere decision of giving Caballero some game time for his hardwork, his performance in the however would certainly not go unnoticed and now that it is confirmed that new signing Mendy won’t be featuring in today’s match, it’s a tough decision for Lampard to choose between sticking with underfiring Kepa or opt for Caballero instead.
I think if there’s anything we have learned from Lampard so far since he became Chelsea’s manager is the fact that he goes for what is working for him at the moment.
With Chelsea performing brilliantly in their last match, Lampard will certainly keep a tactic or two from that match and implement it in West Brom today.
In terms of the expected lineup, Lampard is more likely to start a front line of Mount Werner and Hudson Odoi.
Odoi has had very limited game time since the beginning of the season and considering he is the only natural winger available in the squad as most wingers are out due to fitness issues, he should be having much more game time.
Lampard tried different ways of playing without a natural winger in our first two Premier League games but it didn’t work out but using Hudson Odoi against Barnsley looked like a better idea than the rest he has been having and would most likely continue with that today.
Havertz is obviously expected to continue in his no 10 role in which he flourished in our last match with Kovacic and Kante sitting behind just to hold the midfield.
For the defense, Thiago Silva and Zouma haven’t played together yet but they look like our best performing center back currently and will both be expected today in the lineup.
Chilwel will most likely be handed his full debut while Reece James stays at right fullback.
The next tough decision will we between Kepa and Caballero but I think after the performance from Caballero against Barnsley, he deserves to start today and Lampard would want to avoid stories that touch from starting Kepa.
