Match report

Chelsea crashed out of the Carabao Cup in the round of 16 against Tottenham yesterday.

It was a very youthful and mediocre Tottenham side and Chelsea failed to capitalize on that as they were beaten 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 90 mins draw.

Chelsea looked like the much better team in the first half. We dominated and scored a beautiful goal early through Timo Werner but relaxed after that and failed to add to our lead.

Tottenham came back looking stronger in the second half and with just a 1-0 lead they knew with a bit of pressure, Chelsea will break.

It finally happened about the 84th minute after Mourinho had brought in reinforcement through Harry Kane and Lucas Moura. Tottenham then looked more decisive in attack and Lamela was left in space to score after a beautiful cross from Sergio Regulion

Chelsea had several opportunity to close the game tho in the second half before Lamela’s goal. Werner got his shot saved, Callum Hudson Odoi blasted wide, and Mason Mount couldn’t make a simple final pass for Hudson to tap in.

After those series of misses from Chelsea in the second half, you just know it was going to come back and hunt us and it did.

Chelsea then drew a game which they could have won easily because of their lack of attitude and precision in attack.

The game moved on to penalties and new signing Mendy was sent the wrong way in all the five penalties shot at him. While Chelsea scored their first four kicks through Tammy Abraham, Azpilcueta, Jorginho, and Emerson, Mason Mount who played the fifth penalty for Chelsea and had to score to keep the shootout going, shot wide and we lost 5-4 in the shootout and crashed out.

What went wrong

This is pretty simple. Our mentality dropped after we scored the first goal just like it happened in our FA Cup finals against Arsenal last season.

We weren’t acting like we want to score more, we missed some few opportunities and we weren’t even creating those opportunities as we should have considering the low quality Tottenham’s side that Mourinho put out to play.

It is high time these players realised that a two goal lead isn’t a secure lead not to talk of one.

Tottenham were simply stronger than us mentally and they deserve to go through.

Lampard’s Fault?

Absolutely not. Lampard had no fault in yesterday’s game but the players in the pitch who underrated that Tottenham’s side especially in the first half knowing fully well that they had reinforcement like Harry Kane and Moura who could come later and caused problems.

If they were determined and serious, they could have created and scored much more chances in the first half and wouldn’t have to play under pressure in the second half but they were far from serious especially after Werner’s goal.

Lampard did well to spark up the game later in the second half by bringing in Tammy Abraham for Giroud who was awful throughout and also Kante to that midfield and we started to create more chance but weren’t able to finish off these chances.

Lampard simply did his part but the players couldn’t do their part.

There’s nothing Lampard could have done to make Werner, Odoi and Mount convert those chances they got in the second half.

Odoi’s Chance

Mount’s Chance

Maybe the only fault from Lampard yesterday was choosing Mount to take the last spot kick.

Last spot kicks are always kept for experienced penalty takers because it mostly decides the whole shootout and considering the fact that Lampard made the same error with Tammy Abraham in our Super Cup final against Liverpool last year, then he should have known better than choosing Mason Mount who is inexperienced in the aspect of penalties. He could have traded places with Azpilcueta or Jorginho who have greater mentality since Werner was having a cramp and couldn’t partake in the shootout.

Positives from the match

  1. Werner’s goal: Wener finally got to score his first competitive goal for Chelsea in an awesome fashion and I think that’s very good for his confidence and improvement. The wait was already getting to long and it must have already started to affect him mentally but thanks to Azpilcueta’s beautiful assist, Werner has opened a new page in Chelsea’s goalscorer book.
  2. Mendy’s Debut: Chelsea’s new goalkeeper was handed his debut yesterday and he looked strong. He didn’t have his dream debut match or shootout but his performance for 90 mins was awesome. He made to good few saves to keep Chelsea in the game and always looked commanding in the box. Something we haven’t seen in a long while.
  3. Kante’s performance: Kante’s path and performance for Chelsea have been rough recently but the French general looked really promising and sharp when he came on. He made some great tackles and really changed the whole dimension of the game to Chelsea’s favour but our attackers were just unable to finish the chances that were now coming in before Lamela scored. Kante could turn out to be fantastic in that box to box role after all.
  4. Defense: There’s still alot to work to be done here but there were good and positive signs from Zouma and Tomori yesterday. They dealt with Tottenham’s attack will until Emerson left Lamela in space during the equaliser.
