Marcos Alonso made a surprised entrance into the starting lineup yesterday for Chelsea against Burnley and topped his comeback with a beautiful volley goal.
The Spanish international had a fallout with former coach Frank Lampard after Chelsea’s 3-3 draw against West Brom last year September and hasn’t featured in a single match since that day.
With a new manager in Thomas Tuchel, Alonso’s hope of getting game time increased especially as Tuchel decides to use wings backs instead of full backs, something Alonso is a specialist at.
Many fans as well as pundits believes Alonso is a more effective wingback than Chilwell because of his scoring instincts. He has always performed well while playing the wingback position where he is relieved from much of his defensive duties.
Tuchel however has revealed the reason he opted for Alonso instead of Chilwell in the Burnley’s game and surprisingly it isn’t because Alonso is better upfront or better offensively but rather, it has to do with defensive duties according to the German.
Tuchel’s believed that Alonso’s height would help the defense more than Chilwell in a team like Burnley who specializes in set pieces and crosses and he claims that was the key reason for the selection.
Speaking to the media after our 2-0, Tuchel said:
We had the reason, it was not because we were unhappy with Chilwell but we opted for more size to defend set pieces.
Marcos is used to playing in this role, he has good timing arriving in the box. In the end we are very happy that he scored the second goal that finished the game.
