Chelsea are prepared to make an offer of up to £150m for Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland this summer, according to reports.
Haaland has become one of the most valuable players in world football after bagging 57 goals in 59 matches for Dortmund since joining from RB Salzburg in January 2020.
The Norway international has been linked with other clubs including Manchester United, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain – but rumours have been consistent about Chelsea’s interest this summer.
When asked about the transfer rumours in May, Haaland said: “I have a contract for a couple of years, so I am respectful towards my contract.
“I am a simple guy. When I like something I just want to have more – when I score a goal, I always chase the next goal.”
Despite that there have been reports that Haaland ‘expects to join Chelsea before the new season begins’ and that he has agreed personal terms with the Blues.
Real Madrid seem to be their closest rivals for a deal this summer but the La Liga giants are currently starved of cash and unlikely to stump up the millions needed to sign Haaland.
And now 90min claim that Chelsea ‘are prepared to offer up to £150m’ to get a deal for Haaland over the line this summer despite the possibility of getting him for less than half that price in a year’s time.
A €75m (£64m) release clause will kick in from next summer but Chelsea aren’t prepared to wait and risk losing out on the striker.
It is their ‘belief that such a huge bid will not be turned down by the Bundesliga side’ this summer as they look to bring in a new goalscorer.
Although Timo Werner played well for much of the season, he didn’t score anywhere near enough goals for the Blues and they’ve been scouring the market for an out and out striker.
Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku was one player who was interesting owner Roman Abramovich but the Belgium international recently ruled out a move away from the Serie A outfit.
And 90min add that Chelsea ‘have spied an opportunity to pull off what would be a huge new British record transfer’ as they look to beat the competition to Haaland.
The Blues ‘have already held lengthy talks with Haaland’s camp’ over a transfer to Stamford Bridge with the player ‘happy to move to London’.
The Premier League club would still ‘prefer it to be closer to £135m given the vast expense’ and Chelsea’s transfer team see it as ‘an investment both for now and the long-term’.
Despite Dortmund’s public insistence that Haaland is going nowhere this summer, a source has told 90min that ‘it is now a different situation with figures between £135m and £150m being talked about’.
