Chelsea have reportedly made a late attempt to land Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane in spite of his imminent transfer to Manchester United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made a centre-half partner for Harry Maguire his No.1 target this summer after agreeing on a fee to bring Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho to the club.

The Sun claimed last week that Red Devils deals for Varane and Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier were all but done with official announcements expected towards the end of next week.×375&!4&btvi=2&fsb=1&xpc=hAVF8yldJK&p=https%3A//

It is said that the club will pay Real Madrid around £50 million for Varane, who will sign a five-year deal.

However, Spanish outlet Marca add that Chelsea have declared their interest late in the day as the Blues attempt to hijack league rivals’ deal for Varane.

There is no hint that the west Londoners’ late interest will sway Raphael with the Los Blancos man still expected to seal a move to Old Trafford.

However, the Blues boss Thomas Tuchel is believed to be very keen on bringing a central defender to Stamford Bridge this summer, with the club linked to Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba and Sevilla’s Jules Kounde, among others.
